| More good advice from R. Don Steele |

You should seek out people to be friends with that make *you* happy (so I seek out people who put a smile on my face). On a related note, don't remain in a situation in which you are unhappy. Get the Hell out! Leave! Fast! (See http://www.steelballs.com - mostly aimed at men, but women who are not interested in defining male chauvinistic behaviour can benefit from this as well). |

| An unintended consequence |
[May. 29th, 2007|09:16 pm] |
Today I was in an office, waiting to get served, and most of the workers were ladies, of working age. There were a couple of young women waiting in chairs, taking up both of the chairs, so I asked one of the workers for an extra chair. I normally think ahead of discussions so that it takes someone two or three exchanges to catch up, but I didn't forsee the following effect. The young women heard me and got up from their chairs so that I could sit down, but I said "I'm not going to sit down while a lady is standing." It was amazing how fast the workers got up from their desks and helped me with my paperwork! |

| Heroism in "The Lord of the Rings" |
[Jun. 2nd, 2006|04:52 pm] |
A thread running through Tolkien's work re heroism was that the hero often gets the greatest women, with the noteable exception of Turin, who unknowingly married his sister. That latter -- unknowing incest -- is a common theme in grim old Norse tales from which Tolkien was heavily influenced.
The elf-lord Thingol married Melian of the Maiar (the Maiar are the lowest ranks of the Gods of Middle-Earth). Beren won Luthien, and Aragon won Arwen. The male heroes clearly tend to marry upward. |
