...in the November 2008 "Analog Science Fiction and Fact," begins (after an interlude) with a blind girl making a post in her LiveJournal and instant-messaging with her friend. Then she gets an email from a researcher in Tokyo who has an experimental procedure that might partially give her vision for the first time... Her home is set in Waterloo, Ontario, which is now -- at this time, in reality -- a booming high-tech area; the story doesn't seem to be set too far into the future, only a year or two, with the 2008 Beijing Olympics a recent memory. The girl's family moved there because her father changed jobs to do research at the foundation, or institute, founded and endowed by RIM (Research In Motion) -- the foundation is non-fiction; it is the "Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perimeter_Institute_for_Theoretical_Physics ). ( Political comment ) The story, part 1 of 4 of a serial, is also shaping up to be heavily based on "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind," by Julian Jaynes, which the girl, Caitlin, is reading. |

I heard somewhere that when Coca-Cola's famous slogan, "Coke Adds Life", was translated into Chinese, amused or bemused and puzzled Chinese people read "Coke will bring your ancestors back to life." However, a Chinese person I just asked thinks that is just a story. |
